Personal Statement

I have been at Thompson Rivers University for the past 4 years. My program is the Communications and Digital Journalism program, majoring in media studies and minoring in accounting. Over this time I have learned different concepts and theories that have aided my understanding of the media world. These concepts and theories have also helped me prepare my school work and how I as a communicator can effectively use these ideas in my day to day life.

Some courses throughout my University career have given me very important life long skills. These courses have helped me with my engagement in my education and gave me a sense of experience I would not have learned anywhere else. These courses have also helped me learn that I would enjoy being in the photography and social media field after university. The ILO of engagement taught me both socially responsible ways of how to use photography in the real world and gave me the life long skill I would not have had if I went into a different program.

At TRU I have been able to assist with specific photography projects, like the yearly grad shoot done in the CMNS 3530. This shoot helped me learn how to contact, connect and photograph paying clients, while also giving me portfolio work for my future. It also gave me different challenges I wouldn’t get if I had taken photos of my friends and each person I photographed had a different background, appearance and expectations of their photos. It helped develop my photography skills while also giving me the experience I would bring into the real world.

This portfolio will highlight my photography skills, written skills, graphic design skills and interviewing skills as it shows a vast array of course work I have done throughout my university career.
